Breaking๐Ÿ”ฅ: ADC presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar picks Amechi as running mate

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly picked former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the January 16, 2027, presidential election.

The decision follows weeks of negotiations within the opposition coalition, particularly after disagreements during the presidential primary and the movement of key figures to rival political platforms. Atikuโ€™s choice is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the ADCโ€™s national appeal, pairing a candidate from the North-East with Amaechi from the South-South, creating what political observers describe as an โ€œAAโ€ ticket.

Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor, initially declined interest in the vice-presidential slot but accepted the nomination after appeals from influential political leaders. Atiku assured that Amaechi would play a major role in both the campaign and a possible ADC government.

The former Vice President also used the announcement to criticize the APC-led federal government, alleging attempts to weaken opposition platforms ahead of the 2027 elections and calling on Nigerians to defend democratic freedoms.

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reportedly threatened to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress following a fresh dispute over party tickets in Kano State.

The crisis started after the NDC replaced several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano.

According to reports, the changes were made to enforce a pre-agreed 60/40 power-sharing formula between the Kwankwasiyya bloc and the original NDC structure.

Under the arrangement, the Kwankwasiyya bloc was expected to receive 60 percent of elective positions and party offices, while the existing NDC structure would retain 40 percent.

A document reportedly signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, showed that adjustments were made to some federal constituency and state assembly tickets.

The affected federal constituencies include Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Sumaila/Takai and Gwale.

Changes were also reportedly made to House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.

The development comes days after NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, officially named Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 general election.

The dispute has raised fresh concerns over internal power sharing within the opposition party as it prepares for the 2027 race.
