𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗠𝗢𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗔𝗣: 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣
(Thanksgiving Service - September 27, 2026)

𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘: Genesis 22:1-18

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗚𝗢𝗗 𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗨𝗦:
We examined the quality of the worship that we as Christians must offer to God, defining worship simply as knowing God's worth and responding accordingly. From our anchor text in Genesis 22, we gleaned some important lessons: that the whole essence of the test recorded in the passage was to find out if Abraham really trusted God. This is a question that we should honestly ask ourselves. Do I really trust God? You can rest assured that the tests will come to prove your answer.

As shocking as the instruction to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt offering was, even more shocking was Abraham's willful obedience as recorded in verse 3. We understand that Abraham was able to obey because of whom he had seen God to be. This was what Jesus tried to teach us in Matthew 13:44. When we find God's kingdom, joy will come, and this joy is what propels true worship. So Abraham was not forced or cajoled to obey God; he knew God's worth, and the knowledge of that worth moved him to absolute obedience.

From verses 5-8, we observe that Abraham had faith and reasoned like a child. Even though he was going to kill and burn Isaac, he still believed that he would return with him simply because God had promised him that through Isaac, his seed would be blessed. Through the entire test, God was trying to prove to Abraham and to us, that faith in Him has to be bankable. The proof of your faith is that you exchanged something for it. What costs you nothing has no value to it.

Is your worship bankable? Do you have a track record of obedience that you can show God? These are the questions that we should consider as we meditate on this teaching, reminding ourselves of the deep joy and trust that come from truly knowing our God.
