Meet the Newly Appointed Chief of Army Staff — Major General Waidi Shuaibu

The Nigerian Army proudly welcomes Major General Waidi Shuaibu, a distinguished member of the 41 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy, as the new Chief of Army Staff.

Born on 18 December 1971, Major General Shuaibu hails from Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, North Central Nigeria. He succeeds Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Army Staff, following his remarkable tenure as the 14th Theatre Commander, Operation HADIN KAI in the North-East.

During his command, Major General Shuaibu spearheaded significant advancements in counter-terrorism operations and troop welfare. Under his leadership, troops refurbished and upgraded key military hardware, including 10 VP-1 Type 89 APCs, five BMPs, three Steyr APCs, and six Camel MRAPs, in preparation for the 2024 dry season operations.

He led deep clearance operations into Sambisa Forest and the Tumbuktu Triangle, targeting ISWAP and JAS strongholds, while implementing the Local Community Policing and Peace Enforcement (LCPPE) initiative, which strengthened civil–military relations and enhanced intelligence sharing.

Between February 2024 and October 2025, his strategic leadership resulted in the neutralisation of over 567 terrorists, recovery of 492 weapons and 10,714 rounds of ammunition, and the rescue of more than 2,200 civilians from terrorist enclaves. His troops also conducted 9,800 patrols and launched nearly 1,000 offensive operations during this period.

He also supervised Operation Desert Sanity III (Feb–June 2024), facilitating the safe return of over 4,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kukawa. Notably, his forces eliminated notorious terrorist leaders, Tahir Baga and Abu Rijal, during decisive raids in 2024. In recognition of his exceptional leadership, Operation HADIN KAI received the Security Watch Award in December 2024.
