PRESS RELEASE

ONDO NSCDC WARNS AGAINST SPREAD OF UNVERIFIED SOCIAL MEDIA INFORMATION CAPABLE OF CAUSING SECURITY BREACHES

The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has expressed concern over the growing misuse of social media platforms to circulate unverified information capable of undermining security efforts and causing public panic within the state.

The Command has observed with dismay the spread of rumours and misleading reports on social media alleging the invasion of schools by bandits. Such unsubstantiated claims are capable of creating unnecessary fear among residents, disrupting public order, and eroding confidence in the security architecture of the state.

The Command strongly condemns the dissemination of false information and advises members of the public to exercise caution and responsibility in the use of social media platforms. Citizens are urged to verify information before sharing and to rely solely on credible and official sources for security-related updates.

The NSCDC wishes to reassure residents that the Safe School Initiative remains one of the Corps' top priorities. The safety and security of students, teachers, and members of school communities across Ondo State remain paramount.

In collaboration with other security agencies and relevant educational authorities, the Corps continues to maintain and strengthen security measures around schools to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for all.

Parents, guardians, and members of the public are therefore advised to disregard unverified reports capable of causing panic and undermining public confidence. Instead, they should support security agencies by providing timely and actionable information that will aid ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property.

The State Commandant reiterates the Command's commitment to the protection of lives and property and urges all residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.

The Command further assures the public that security agencies in the state remain proactive and fully prepared to respond to any credible threat to public safety.

ICCES AFFIRMS OPERATIONAL READINESS FOR ONDO SOUTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT BYE-ELECTION

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ondo State, Dr. Mutiu Olaleke Agboke has convened a quarterly consultative meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) ahead of the Ondo South Senatorial District Bye-Election scheduled for Saturday, 20 June 2026.

Welcoming members of the committee, Dr. Agboke expressed appreciation for their continued support and collaboration in ensuring credible and peaceful elections in the state. He also briefed participants on the level of preparedness of the Commission for the forthcoming bye-election.

Addressing the gathering, the REC stated:

"We are here to discuss, among other things, the preparations and security strategies for the conduct of the Ondo South Senatorial District Bye-Election in compliance with INEC's constitutional mandate, as well as draw your attention to critical electoral offences as stipulated in the Electoral Act 2026."

The election is scheduled to take place across the six local government areas that make up the Ondo South Senatorial District, covering 1,354 polling units and 66 registration areas.

During the meeting, participants acknowledged that one of the most critical aspects of electoral preparedness is logistics, including the procurement, security, and deployment of both sensitive and non-sensitive election materials. Security agencies present assured the Commission of their commitment to deploying personnel early enough to facilitate the timely movement of election materials and ad hoc staff.

The REC emphasized that the success of the 2026 Ondo South Senatorial District Bye-Election is a collective responsibility and not solely that of INEC. He noted that robust public engagement and voter sensitization efforts across the state would significantly enhance participation and promote public confidence in the electoral process.

Members of ICCES present at the meeting included the Resident Electoral Commissioner, the Commissioner of Police, the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Correctional Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigerian Navy, the Federal Fire Service, and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of all stakeholders to ensuring a peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process in Ondo State.

The case was reported at the Command Headquarters by Mrs. Linda John, proprietor of Remmy Guest House, Alagbaka, Akure, who alleged that one Akinsanmi Olawale, a 32-year-old male employee of the establishment, had engaged in fraudulent activities.

Following the complaint, the suspect was arrested on 18 May 2026 and an investigation was immediately launched.
