WIKE THREATENS TO SEAL BUILDINGS, BANKS LINKED TO TURAKI-LED PDP FACTION IN ESCALATING PARTY WAR

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has issued a fierce warning against the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party allegedly led by Kabiru Turaki, threatening to shut down any office or bank account operating in the party’s name under the disputed leadership structure.

The explosive declaration comes amid deepening crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party following claims by Turaki that he had assumed leadership of the party after a Supreme Court ruling reportedly invalidated the PDP’s 2025 national convention.

Turaki was recently announced as chairman of a 13-member interim National Working Committee allegedly constituted during a controversial National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.

Reacting during his monthly media briefing, Wike accused the Turaki-led camp of attempting to mislead Nigerians and operating outside the legally recognised structure of the party.

“You cannot disobey court judgments and then turn around to deceive Nigerians that you have a legitimate structure. That is not how democracy works,” Wike declared.

The former Rivers State governor challenged the faction to publicly open an official PDP bank account for nomination fees if it truly believed it was the authentic leadership of the party.

In a dramatic escalation, Wike warned that any bank that allows the faction to operate a PDP account could face serious consequences, insisting that only the recognised party leadership possesses the legitimate incorporation and registration documents required for such operations.

He further vowed to seal any building in Abuja being used as a parallel PDP national secretariat by the Turaki-led group.

“If anybody goes ahead to open an illegal office in the name of the PDP in Abuja, I will seal it,” Wike warned. “I will not allow any breach of peace because my duty is to maintain law and order in the Federal Capital Territory.”

The development signals a dangerous intensification of the PDP’s internal power struggle, with legal battles, leadership disputes, and competing claims to legitimacy now threatening the stability of one of Nigeria’s major opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

Omoyele Sowore has announced the release of Farouk Ozigi Onimisi following days of detention that he described as unjust and politically motivated.

According to Sowore, Onimisi was arrested in Abuja by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and subsequently transferred across state lines, where he was allegedly held incommunicado for several days before being formally arraigned in court.

Sowore claimed that sustained pressure and intervention by rights advocates forced the authorities to bring Onimisi before a magistrate court, which eventually granted him bail after deliberations.

He further disclosed that all bail conditions have now been met, leading to Onimisi’s release and reunion with his family.

The activist expressed appreciation to Amnesty International Nigeria, legal representatives including Barrister Aliwo, and other supporters who played roles in securing the release.

Sowore also used the occasion to condemn what he described as oppression and abuse of state power, alleging that the detention was orchestrated by forces linked to the Kogi State government under Usman Ododo.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from the Kogi State Government or the Nigeria Police Force regarding the allegations surrounding the arrest and detention.

The development is expected to further fuel conversations around civil liberties, due process, and the role of security agencies in politically sensitive cases across Nigeria.

A deadly meningitis outbreak has struck Sokoto State, leaving dozens feared dead and hundreds infected in what is rapidly emerging as a major public health emergency in northern Nigeria.

Reports indicate that the outbreak, believed to be cerebrospinal meningitis, has spread across affected communities, with children and young people among the worst hit. Local health sources say fatalities have been rising daily, with some communities recording multiple deaths within short periods. 

Residents in impacted areas describe a surge in patients presenting symptoms such as high fever, severe neck pain, vomiting, and loss of consciousness—classic signs associated with meningitis. In several cases, victims reportedly die within hours of showing symptoms, highlighting the aggressive nature of the disease. 

Health facilities are said to be overwhelmed, with increasing numbers of people seeking urgent medical attention as fear spreads across communities. In some villages, local leaders have reported significant death tolls, particularly among children, as authorities race to contain the outbreak. 

The Sokoto State Government has confirmed the outbreak and deployed emergency health teams to affected areas, providing medications and launching investigations to determine the full scale and cause of the crisis. 

Experts warn that northern Nigeria remains highly vulnerable during the dry season, as hot, dusty conditions create an environment conducive to the spread of meningitis, especially in overcrowded or poorly ventilated areas. 

The outbreak adds to recurring seasonal meningitis crises across the region, raising urgent concerns about preparedness, vaccination coverage, and rapid response capacity.

As the situation continues to evolve, authorities are urging residents to seek immediate medical care upon noticing symptoms, while intensified containment efforts are underway to prevent further loss of life.

DSS DISTANCES AGENCY FROM SERAP DEFEAMATION CASE, SAYS OPERATIVES ACTED IN PERSONAL CAPACITY

The Department of State Services has clarified that the defamation case recently decided against the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) was not filed by the agency itself, but by individual operatives acting in their personal capacity.

In a statement issued by its Public Relations unit, the DSS said it had been “drawn to several publications” that misrepresented the case, stressing that the lawsuit was instituted privately by two of its officers and not as an official action of the Service. 

The clarification follows widespread reports suggesting that the DSS as an institution had taken legal action against Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project over alleged defamation.

According to the agency, the distinction is important to properly understand the legal context of the judgment, which awarded damages in favour of the affected officers.

The case had generated reactions across civic and legal spaces, with concerns raised about its implications for accountability advocacy and freedom of expression.

By distancing itself from the lawsuit, the DSS appears to be managing public perception and reinforcing that the matter was a private legal dispute involving its personnel rather than an institutional crackdown.

The development adds another layer to the ongoing discourse around the relationship between security agencies and civil society organisations in Nigeria, particularly in areas of transparency, criticism, and legal accountability.
