NCC Moves USSD Charges to Airtime, Not Bank Accounts
Starting today, June 3, 2025, USSD transaction charges will no longer be deducted from customers’ bank accounts. Instead, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed that the charges be taken from users’ mobile airtime.
This change was confirmed in an email sent by United Bank for Africa (UBA) to its customers. The new model, known as the End-User Billing (EUB) system, means that each USSD session will now cost ₦6.98 per 120 seconds, billed by your mobile network operator.
Users will receive a consent prompt before each transaction. Airtime will only be deducted if the customer agrees and if the bank is available to complete the service.
UBA added that customers who prefer not to use USSD under the new billing system can opt out and continue with alternative digital channels like mobile apps and internet banking.
This development comes amid efforts by the NCC and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to resolve the long-running dispute between telecom companies and banks over unpaid USSD service fees, reportedly totaling over ₦250 billion.
In early 2025, NCC had threatened to suspend USSD services for defaulting banks. By February, MTN confirmed receiving ₦32 billion of the ₦72 billion owed by banks.

WANTED: AWOL Soldier Lance Corporal Festus Igenkhai – A Menace in Uniform Turned TikTok Nuisance
Lance Corporal Festus Igenkhai has since been declared Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL) by the Nigerian Army after deserting his duty post on November 8, 2024, in violation of military regulations.
Enlisted less than four years ago, Igenkhai was known for previous acts of misconduct. Before abandoning his post, he had twice faced internal military disciplinary trials for violating the Nigerian Army’s social media policy, including releasing unauthorized and unapproved content online.
Rather than correct his behaviour, Igenkhai became even more defiant. Operating under the TikTok alias “EX Man”, he has now turned to social media to spread false, inflammatory, and defamatory content targeted at senior military officers, including service chiefs. His content is aimed at stirring unrest, disloyalty, and public disaffection toward the Armed Forces.
Security sources confirm that none of his allegations have been supported with credible evidence. Instead, he is said to be peddling baseless conspiracy theories and painting himself as a whistleblower — all in a bid to gain attention and sympathy online.
Military insiders describe Igenkhai as a disgraced soldier who failed to uphold the core values of discipline, loyalty, and duty. His actions are now viewed as a betrayal of the Nigerian Army and a violation of the sacred military oath he once swore to uphold.
A nationwide manhunt has been launched to track and apprehend Lance Corporal Festus Igenkhai. Security forces are working round the clock to bring him to justice and restore the integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
