11 months ago when we found Samuel during one of our street corners activities, he was in severe pains. He had suffered an electric burn to his entire back and hadn’t been treated for 6months. He couldn’t even raise his hands due to the injuries.

We stepped in as a community and crowdfunded for his surgery. It was successful and he has spent the last couple of months surviving the pain and working on his rehabilitation.

Together we gave him a second chance at life, and a chance to build a better, brighter future.

This is what Street Corners makes possible.

We taught him to carry everything except the right to set it down.
We taught him to be strong
before we told him what strong means
before he had a word for the ache.

We gave him a fist and called it a future.
We gave him silence and called it strength.
We gave him a road and forgot to ask
where he was headed; if his feet were sore.

Look at him, not at what you need him to become.
Look at what he already is:
a full sky, still learning he is allowed to rain.

Happy International Day to the boy child.
Boys are not a problem to be managed; there are questions we have refused to answer with tenderness. Now is the time to answer, and answer them right.

Reunification is not a straight path. It often involves a delicate dance to rehabilitate the child and the home they had to escape from. It requires persistence, grace and patience. No child really wants to call the streets home. The story never begins with them running away from home and that’s why we do what we do.

We understand that they are children first and do not expect any form of perfection from them but treat them with love, kindness and compassion even when they make mistakes. Through this, we are able to strengthen the bond needed to completely transform their lives and shape their future for the better.
