PRESS RELEASE
HANDSHAKE PATROL: ENUGU POLICE FOIL ATTEMPTED ARMED ROBBERY, NEUTRALIZE ONE SUSPECT, ARREST FOUR OTHERS IN BORDER OPERATIONS, RECOVER FI****MS, SUSPECTED DRUGS, AND OTHER EXHIBITS
The Enugu State Police Command has recorded significant operational successes in its sustained border security efforts under the Inspector-General of Police's "Handshake Patrol" initiative. The operations, conducted at different border locations across the State, led to the foiling of an attempted armed robbery, the neutralization of one armed robbery suspect, the arrest of four other suspects, and the recovery of two fi****ms, suspected illicit drugs, and other incriminating exhibits.
In one of the operations on June 28, 2026, at about 6:15 a.m., Operatives attached to the Command's Amechi-Idodo Division, in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch, foiled an armed robbery attempt and dislodged the criminal gang that had blocked a section of the Enugu–Abakaliki Road to rob commuters. The gang, which had been on the Command's watchlist for armed robberies along the border road, engaged the operatives in a gun duel during which its leader, Ifesinachi Kenneth (male), sustained gunshot injuries and was arrested, while other members escaped. His confessional statements led to the arrest of Izuchukwu Nwanga (male), who kept the gang's proceeds of crime. Kenneth was taken for medical treatment but was later confirmed dead.
In another border operation carried out at about 5:30 p.m. on the same date, Police Operatives attached to the Umumba Division, acting on credible intelligence linked to an armed robbery gang, stormed a criminal hideout at Umumba Ndiagu Community in Ezeagu Local Government Area, bordering Anambra State. The operatives arrested two suspects identified as Uwah Ifesinachi Sunday (male, 23) and Chinonso Okafor Paul (male, 25). One locally fabricated pistol, a knife, a scissors, and quantities of substances suspected to be Indian h**p were recovered.
Similarly, at about 10:00 a.m. on the same date, Operatives of the Command's Distress Response Squad (DRS), while conducting stop-and-search operations along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway at Ugwuoba in Oji-River Local Government Area, bordering Anambra State, intercepted a commercial tricycle conveying passengers. A search of the passengers led to the recovery of a locally made cut-to-size gun belonging to Ifediri Nwobu (male, 21). The suspect attempted to evade arrest by fleeing and jumping into a nearby river but was successfully apprehended.
Further investigations aimed at arresting other suspects connected to the cases are ongoing, while all apprehended suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, commended the courage, professionalism, and collaboration demonstrated by the Police Operatives and members of the Neighbourhood Watch in the successful operations. He reaffirmed the Command's commitment to strengthening border security and combating violent crimes through intelligence-led policing, while urging residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of ongoing efforts to rid the State of criminal elements.

PRESS RELEASE
CP GIWA ORDERS INTENSIFIED STATEWIDE ENFORCEMENT ON UNREGISTERED VEHICLES, AND OBSCURED, DEFACED, OR UNLAWFULLY COVERED NUMBER PLATES IN ENUGU STATE
The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, has directed operatives of the Command to intensify the strict but professional enforcement on the use of unregistered vehicles and vehicles with obscured, defaced, or unlawfully covered registration number plates across the State.
The directive follows the subsisting order of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, mandating the impoundment of such vehicles and the prosecution of offenders nationwide, given the security risks they pose, their frequent use in the commission of crimes, and their violation of extant laws.
CP Giwa emphasized that unregistered vehicles and tampered, obscured, defaced, or concealed number plates undermine law enforcement efforts, frustrate crime detection and investigation, and are often used by criminal elements to evade identification and arrest. He therefore charged supervisory officers to ensure that the enforcement is carried out strictly in accordance with the law and with the utmost professionalism, civility, and respect for citizens' rights.
The Commissioner warned that any officer found exploiting the exercise for extortion, harassment, or any other form of misconduct will face severe disciplinary sanctions. He urged motorists operating unregistered vehicles or using defaced, obscured, or covered number plates, except where expressly permitted by law, to desist forthwith and comply with all relevant regulations.
CP Giwa also enjoined residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety by reporting criminal activities and suspicious persons to the nearest Police Station. He equally urged members of the public to report any case of police misconduct through the Command's Complaint Response Unit on 09160002486, 09160002487, 07059160602, or 08176255557.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, has vowed to sustain the Command's crackdown on crime and criminality through proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and the relentless hunt for criminal elements across Enugu State. This commitment was recently demonstrated through separate intelligence-guided operations that led to the arrest of three suspects linked to armed robbery, kidnapping, and illicit drug peddling, and the recovery of two fi****ms, six rounds of 9mm ammunition, one live cartridge, and large quantities of suspected illicit drugs.
On May 30, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., acting on credible intelligence, operatives attached to the Command's Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) stormed a drinking spot along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway and arrested two suspected armed robbers and kidnappers.
