The situation of legal tender in Nigeria today, if not so as not to insight the people or misinform the people, is more or less a war in the state. The situation that has caused a tussle between the Executive, the Judiciary and the Legislative arm of the government with each giving different directives on the decision to make and Nigerians don't even know which way to go. The citizens don't even know who owns the position of decision making, I thought we are in a democratic state.
It is sad that in a country like ours, our leaders do not care about how their citizens are fairing and go about their daily life activities. Yet, we will come tomorrow to blame colonisation and slavery as cause of our setbacks as Africans; Nigerians. We've failed as a people to understand ourselves and make a profiteering decision that will help develop us.
If a decision on this kind of issue could not be made to make life easier for the citizens, what then is the duty of the leaders. No wonder youthful exorbitant is playing recklessly in our political scene today. Youths taking advantage of the incompetencies of our leaders, without adequate knowledge of our past, evaluation of the present and settling the goal for the future but much concerned about getting the power which they don't even know how to use, perhaps we would go back to square one.
It is quite sad that people who worked for their money could not have access to it, workers are paid money and could not have access to withdraw their money, meanwhile the Central Bank of Nigeria kept shouting online banking. Wait! In which country? With what data is CBN making his decision on online banking. How would such a system work in this kind of dilapidated structure of education. In a country of over 200million citizens with over 70% uneducated people and 20% half educated persons? How would online banking work?
The government has failed to properly fund education in the country which has led to many people to be on the street and out of school children. Drop outs are on the streets roaming, different strikes on higher institution campuses, lack of quality basic education all contributed to the backward status of education in country, yet CBN wants to enforce online banking on the innocent people of the country and none of the arms of the government could stop him.
Apart from having access to education, how many persons have access to gadgets that will aid smooth running of internet banking? Are these banks themselves upgraded to the level at which they can accommodate convenient online banking? Everyone can testify to the inconsistencies experienced from different banking applications, even USSD transactions. What of bank charges on every online transactions? Does the CBN regulated that? It is just a situation whereby the CBN is making money for some set of people in the country, especially bank owners.
This decision has cost many their lives and properties were lost and destroyed. Just in the name of making one decision and the government does not deem it fit to reverse such a decision; Nigeria, I hail thee!
It is quite funny that the Supreme Court ordered that these currencies remained legal tender till December 31st, 2023; meanwhile, CBN said nothing, Mr. President said nothing, banks started issuing it out, marketers refused to collect it, banks issuing it refused to collect it. To return it to banks becomes a war. He who received it, brought a burden upon himself!
However, a similar case is occurring presently in the United Kingdom where they are experiencing a currency change. Not a single noise was heard about its inconvenience, see my country, I'm sure every news has report the incidents that followed due to hardship; that of Oyo State, Ogun State, Lagos State and so on, just to redesign currency. It's sad that we don't even know what's best for our living. With the qualifications the CBN Governor possess, he could have done better. It is better, the government declares a state of emergency on the legal tender!
The journey of suffering for money still persists till now! We have our money but we can't have access to it. We can't use it!
