May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a unanimous ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, declaring that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. This landmark decision directly overturned the 1896 "separate but equal" doctrine, ruling that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. Led by the legal arguments of civil rights lawyer Thurgood Marshall, the ruling marked a pivotal structural shift. It legally dismantled a system designed to keep a portion of the population at the "periphery" of society and laid the groundwork for the broader Civil Rights Movement.
