Stop Playing It Safe: Nietzsche’s Call to Chase Impossible Dram's

In today’s world of constant noise, conformity, and endless distractions, the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche offers a refreshing and timeless call to action: own yourself. This is not a casual idea. It demands courage, deep reflection, and the resolve to live by your own values, no matter how unpopular they may be.

Nietzsche lived this philosophy with unshakable determination. "No price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself," he once wrote. To him, living authentically meant taking full responsibility for shaping your life’s path.

This essay explores five key lessons from Nietzsche’s thought. They can help anyone who seeks a life of greater freedom and self-ownership. Each lesson asks you to confront hard truths and embrace the power within you.

1. Dare to Stand Alone

“The concept of greatness entails being noble, wanting to be by oneself, being able to be different, standing alone and having to live independently.” — Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil

Nietzsche believed that true greatness begins with the ability to be alone. If you cannot be alone with yourself, you cannot truly know or trust yourself. Those who own themselves do not look to others for validation. They trust their own inner compass.

Today, it is easy to become entangled in the expectations of employers, peers, or social media. Nietzsche saw this as dangerous. When you depend too much on others, you slowly lose your sense of self.

To push back against this, spend regular time alone. This could mean taking long walks, practicing digital detox, or setting aside time each day to reflect. These moments help you stay connected to who you are and make decisions based on your own values, not outside pressure.

2. Follow Your Wildest Dreams

“I know of no better life purpose than to perish in attempting the great and the impossible.” — Nietzsche

Nietzsche’s life was full of pain and isolation, yet he poured his energy into grand philosophical visions. He rejected the idea that life should be about comfort and stability. Instead, he urged us to pursue our boldest dreams, even if we might fail.

Today’s culture values predictable success and safety. Nietzsche would argue that this mindset weakens the human spirit. By chasing dreams that seem beyond your reach, you invite growth, resilience, and a deeper connection to life’s possibilities.

Failure in this pursuit is not shameful. In fact, Nietzsche saw it as noble. Modern society often measures success through status or wealth. But Nietzsche valued the inner transformation that comes from striving toward great ideals. The act of trying itself builds character.

3. Follow Your Goals, Not a System

“Many are stubborn in pursuit of the path they have chosen, few in pursuit of the goal.” — Nietzsche

Many people become trapped in rigid systems: climbing a career ladder, following a fixed routine, or adhering to someone else’s plan. Nietzsche warned against this. Systems can be useful, but only if they serve your true goals.

To own yourself means to focus on what matters most to you. Your ambitions should guide the systems you create, not the other way around. It is important to regularly ask yourself: Am I moving toward my goals, or simply maintaining habits that no longer serve me?

Build a system that is flexible and personal. Review it often. If your priorities change, adjust your system. In this way, you stay true to yourself rather than becoming a slave to routine.

4. Embrace Your Demons

“Be careful, lest in casting out your demon you exorcise the best thing in you.” — Nietzsche

Nietzsche understood the complexity of the human mind. He believed that so-called "negative" emotions like jealousy, anger, or fear are not enemies to destroy, but parts of ourselves to understand and harness.

Repressing these emotions cuts us off from vital parts of our being. Nietzsche’s Dionysian psychology teaches that embracing the full range of our emotions allows for a more authentic and integrated self. Denying these elements weakens us, while using them wisely strengthens us.

For example, jealousy can inspire self-improvement. Anger can fuel constructive action. Rather than fearing these emotions, we can learn to channel them in ways that support our growth. Owning yourself means accepting every part of who you are and using it to your advantage.

5. Give Style to Your Character

“Giving style to one’s character—a great and rare art!” — Nietzsche

Nietzsche saw life as a work of art. He admired figures like Goethe, who shaped their character with intention and grace. To own yourself is not only to know yourself, but also to create yourself.

This means understanding your strengths and weaknesses and choosing how to present them. A flaw can become a unique strength if approached with awareness. For example, a tendency toward pessimism can be reframed as thoughtful caution that protects against poor decisions.

Nietzsche encouraged us to approach self-mastery as an art. Goethe did this through deliberate cultivation of his character. Today, modern figures like Maya Angelou or Elon Musk also show us how intentional self-creation can inspire and empower.

Conclusion

To own yourself is to embrace responsibility for your life and to live with fierce authenticity. It is a demanding path that calls for solitude, courage, and honesty. Yet it offers unmatched freedom.

Modern life often tempts us to trade autonomy for comfort. Nietzsche’s philosophy challenges us to resist this. To stand alone, pursue great dreams, reject empty systems, embrace our inner darkness, and sculpt our character with care are the keys to true ownership of the self.

As Nietzsche wrote: “Become who you are.” In this pursuit lies the deepest form of freedom anyone can hope to achieve.

The ostrich cull is a litmus test: If Canadians accept this, they’ll accept more.

The CFIA says it’s about disease control, but it’s acting like a regime enforcing ownership control. When they forbid second opinions, force animal tagging/chipping, and kill on suspicion — without evidence — it’s no longer about health. It’s about consolidating power, enforcing top-down control over agriculture, and paving the way for a corporate, traceable, and eventually post-animal food system.

This isn’t “science.” It’s a system shift. And farmers are waking up.
Will the general Canadian population wake up? In time?
