Five months ago, 60 children in Rigasa and Unguwan Muazu walked into our literacy spaces with hesitant steps. Some could not recognise the letters of the alphabet. Many had never held a proper book of their own.

Today, those same children can read simple words, write their names, and solve basic numeracy tasks.
What has changed most is the light in their eyes, the confidence to raise a hand when a teacher asks a question, the pride of reading and reciting aloud and the joy of solving a sum correctly to get a round of applause.

At Vision Books4All, we saw that literacy cannot thrive in isolation. We saw how hunger distracted the children from their learning, how poor hygiene made them vulnerable to illness, infections and particularly, scabies and ringworm infections for our almajiri children.

So we added meals to their days, ensuring learning happens on full stomachs. We taught them handwashing, oral hygiene, and provided basic supplies like soaps and buckets, toothbrushes and tooth pastes, detergents to wash their clothes and small acts that restore their dignity and protect their health.

The result?
Children who once sat silently now argue playfully over the right spelling of a word. Their faces that were once clouded with fatigue now brighten when meals are served.
Vulnerabilities that once weighed them down are giving way to resilience.

This is what Vision Books4All stands for, what we stand for. Not just teaching letters and numbers, but nurturing whole children: healthy, curious, and hopeful.

Midline Update: Vision Books4All Basic Literacy Program

We’re halfway through our journey, and the impact is already visible!

Since launching the Basic Literacy Program in underserved communities of Rigasa and Unguwan Muazu, our learners (Almajiri and out-of-school children) have made tremendous progress in foundational reading, writing, numeracy and hygiene.

Here’s what we’ve achieved so far:

✅ 60 children enrolled
✅ Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) accelerated literacy program implemented successfully to midline
✅ 208 hours of foundational literacy, numeracy and hygiene learning
✅ 26 Classes held
✅ 15 weeks of learning
✅ 1,820 nutritious meals distributed
✅ 1,000+ hygiene supplies distributed (soap, toothpaste, detergent & more)
✅ Improved attendance
✅ Children now read simple sentences and write basic words independently
✅ Increased community engagement and parental interest
✅ Celebrated International Children's Day
✅ Conducted a sports event to keep children active
✅ Participated in the Read-A-Create with Dr. Namse Udosen in partnership with Rovinheights Bookshop

The road ahead is still long, but our progress so far gives us hope and the momentum to keep pushing forward.

Thank you for walking this journey with us to our midline. Let’s continue to together until we reach our endline in September!
