So, why do women tend to have iron deficiency? Here are some reasons why.

1. Menstruation.

Women bleed every month during menstruation, as a result, they lose iron. This is even worse for women who bleed heavily (menorrhagia).

2. Low iron intake.

You know all that talk about how a woman should not eat too much because it isn’t very ladylike?

Well, iron deficiency does not agree with that.

A lot of women do not get enough iron-rich foods in their diet, and this is another huge reason why they may experience symptoms like tiredness, weakness, and dizziness.

3. Pregnancy.

During pregnancy, as they say, your body is “eating for two”.

This means your body needs much more iron than it did before.

So, if a woman didn’t have enough iron reserves, she stands a higher risk of developing iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia.

4. Adolescence.

Young adolescent girls require a lot of iron because their bodies are changing and growing.

Many have also started menstruating, which further increases their iron needs.

There are other reasons why a woman can develop iron deficiency; for instance, problems with iron absorption or other causes of bleeding.

These four are however some of the main reasons that are particularly common in women.
