PRESS RELEASE
16TH SEPTEMBER, 2025

*AMDF TO HOLD 7TH BAGAUDA KALTHO MEDIA LECTURE ON FRIDAY*

Africa Media Development Foundation will hold its 2025 Bagauda Kaltho Media Lecture on Friday, 19th September.

2025 Lecture with the theme " Journalism in Turbulent Times: Navigating through the Pressures” is set to equip journalists with skills and strategies to navigate through the challenges and risk they face as they carry out their constitutional duties.

The Paper will be presented by Dr Kabiru Danladi of the Mass Communication Department, Ahamdu Bello University, Zaria with MD IPC Mr Lanre Arogundade from Nigeria, Seth Bokpe from Ghana and from Uganda we will have Sylvia Nankya of Uganda Radio Network respectively as discussants.

The theme is pertinent in view of the current challenges where Journalists especially those who speak truth to power are targets of repressive governments who use different laws available to target the media.

The Lecture will also feature an Award presentation session. This year's Courage in Journalism goes to Thomas Mukhwana a Kenyan journalist who persevered through harassment and arrest during the protest in 2024.

May we use this opportunity to reiterate the need for freedom of information, the need to stop the harassment of journalists and the need for a conducive environment for every human life to thrive. The later can be achieved when journalists are allowed to play their role as the fourth estate of the realm effectively and in safety.

We also encourage those who haven't registered for the lecture to do so following this link

*JOURNALISTS ARE PARTNERS IN PROGRESS; ATTACK ON THE MEDIA IS SACRILEGIOUS*

August 10th marks the end of Nigeria’s protest. The peaceful protest which was schedule to hold for 10 days across the 36 states of the federation was marred by acts of harassments, violence, deaths.

Journalists were not left out as reports of various forms of attacks and intimidation were recorded. Its more disappointing to see that some of these harassments came from security personnel, protesters and thugs.

Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) unreservedly condemn such attacks on journalists. We wish to make it clear that society must understand an attack on media and journalists is an attack on the people and on freedom.

The role of media in information dissemination, as well as development cannot be overlooked. Media’s contribution towards nation building earned it its position as the 4th estate of the realm after the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.

Journalists should always be allowed to carry out their duties without intimidation. The profession is guided by ethics that were carefully formulated to ensure balanced reporting, safety of citizens and development of society.

The Media is a partner. Journalists are there to be the voice that amplify opinions. They should be accorded respect for the duties they carry out.
