For many Lapo babies, this looks familiar—grandfather’s home, uncle’s house, daddy’s inherited property in the village, and more.

These structures reflect rich cultural heritage, but they are vulnerable to collapse, especially under extreme weather caused by climate change.

Their fragility underscores the rising statistics of building collapses and the urgent need to integrate modern structural reinforcements.

While vernacular architecture offers diversity, identity, and a deep sense of belonging, it is important to renovate and adapt these homes to ensure they remain strong, resilient, and sustainable for generations to come.

Last week, Thrivescape Initiative participated in the 2026 retreat of the Action Group on Free Civic Space (AGFCS) held in Abuja.

The retreat provided a valuable opportunity to engage with more than 40 civil society organizations, civic actors, activists, and journalists to reflect on the coalition’s collective efforts in 2025. It also created space to identify opportunities to disrupt, reform, and transform the current security architecture in ways that advance and protect civic space in Nigeria.

As a new NGO member of the coalition, the retreat broadened our understanding of the different dimensions of civic space shrinkage and strengthened our appreciation of the strategic actions required to safeguard civic freedoms.

It also provided insight into the various ways we can contribute meaningfully to expanding civic rights and promoting an enabling environment for all civic actors. A special appreciation to Adekanye Boluwatife for proudly representing Thrivescape Initiative and contributing to conversations on strengthening civic space in Nigeria.

A big shout out to Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri for her leadership

These are not just planning issues.

We have compiled a list of key factors every tenant should consider before renting an apartment.

Beyond the beauty of the paint and tiles, your safety depends on how well a building is designed, constructed, and maintained.

Many of the collapses and demolitions recorded across the country could have been prevented if tenants paid closer attention to these warning signs.
