Did you know?
No active military officer has ever become a 5-star general (Field Marshal in the Army, Admiral of the Fleet in the Navy, or Marshal of the Air Force in the Air Force) in Nigeriaπ³π¬!
Why?π€
The highest rank, the 5-star general (Field Marshal or its equivalent in the Navy and Air Force) is a ceremonial title held by the President as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, not by active military officers.
While this rank is the highest possible, it is not awarded for exceptional service as it might be in some other countries. The highest attainable rank for a serving officer in Nigeria is typically a full General in the Army, an Admiral in the Navy, or an Air Chief Marshal in the Air Force.. (all 4-star ranks) which is usually held by the Chief of Defence Staff.
The 5-star rank of Field Marshal is reserved for the President of Nigeria in their capacity as the Commander-in-Chief, regardless of whether they have a military background or not.
No military officer has ever been promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in active service.
So, the most senior military officer in Nigeria at the moment is Field Marshal (5-star General) Bola Ahmed Tinubu, followed by the Chief of Defence Staff (4-star General) General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede, and then the Chiefs of Army, Naval, and Air Staff (each holding 3-star ranks)
