AUTOPSY vs POSTMORTEM Stop Using them like they mean the Same Thing
Let’s clear this confusion once and for all
A lot of people throw around “Autopsy” and “Postmortem” like they are twins. They are not.
And if you’re discussing anything legal, medical, or even criminal mixing them up can make you sound uninformed.
Here’s the real difference
Postmortem is the general examination of a de@d body to determine the cause of de@th.
It can be:
🥢 External (just observing the body) or;
🥢 Internal (which may involve opening the body)
In simple terms:
👉 Every examination after de@th is a Postmortem.
Autopsy on the other hand is a type of postmortem that involves a thorough internal examination of the body. Organs are examined.
Cause of de@th is investigated deeply. It is more detailed and often used in suspicious or unclear de@ths.
In simple terms:
👉 Every Autopsy is a Postmortem, but not every Postmortem is an Autopsy.
So next time you hear:
“They did an autopsy…”
What they’re really saying is:
“They carried out a detailed internal postmortem.”
And in legal cases, this difference matters.
Because the depth of examination can affect:
🥢 Criminal investigations
🥢 Insurance claims
🥢 Court evidence
One word can change the entire interpretation of a case.
Now tell me
Before today, were you using them like they meant the same thing?
Be honest
