The Bell of Memories

Chapter One: The First Day
The loud ringing of the school bell echoed across the compound of Bright Future Secondary School as new students rushed around nervously with their boxes and mattresses.
“Move fast, Junior!” a tall senior shouted.
Fourteen-year-old Amara tightened her grip on her small bag and followed the crowd into the girls’ hostel. Her heart beat rapidly. It was her first time away from home.
The hostel smelled of soap, perfume, sweat, and dusty lockers. Girls shouted from different corners while seniors walked around proudly like queens.
“Which bunk is mine?” Amara asked softly.
A senior with long braids looked at her and laughed.
“New girl, you’re asking too many questions already.”
The other seniors burst into laughter.
That night, Amara cried quietly under her blanket as she missed her mother terribly. Around her, some students whispered stories while others secretly ate hidden biscuits with torchlights.
Suddenly—
“Ghost! Ghost!!”
The entire hostel exploded into chaos.
Girls jumped from their beds screaming. Some ran outside barefoot while others hid under mattresses. One student fainted near the bathroom.
Amara’s heart almost stopped.
“I saw a white woman near the tap!” someone shouted.
Within minutes, teachers arrived with flashlights only to discover it was a senior wrapped in a white bedsheet trying to scare the juniors.
The whole hostel laughed afterward, but nobody slept peacefully that night.
