NDC Disowns Viral Primary Election Results, Says Only NEC Can Announce Official Outcome

Abuja, Nigeria – June 1, 2026

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed as unauthorized and misleading the results of its nationwide primary elections currently circulating across social media platforms, stressing that only the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) is empowered to officially announce the outcome of the exercise.

The party made its position known in a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., following widespread online circulation of purported results from the primaries conducted on May 28 and 29, 2026.

According to the statement, the NDC urged party members, supporters, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard any figures, rankings, or declarations being shared through unofficial channels, describing them as speculative and lacking the party’s authorization.

“The attention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has been drawn to several purported results of the recently concluded nationwide primary elections circulating on various social media platforms,” the statement read.

“The party wishes to categorically state that these results are unofficial and do not represent the authentic outcome of the primary elections conducted across the country on May 28 and 29, 2026.”

The party emphasized that the collation and verification process remains ongoing and is being handled in accordance with the NDC constitution and electoral guidelines.

Osa Director Esq. explained that only the National Executive Council possesses the constitutional authority to certify and announce the final results after all reports from state and local government chapters have been thoroughly reviewed and ratified.

“The National Executive Council remains the only organ of the party vested with the authority to declare the official results of the primary elections. Any information circulating outside official party channels should be treated as false and misleading,” he stated.

The spokesperson further called on party faithful to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could create confusion or undermine confidence in the internal democratic process of the party.

He reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to transparency, credibility, and fairness throughout the electoral process, assuring aspirants and delegates that every vote cast during the primaries would be duly accounted for.

“The party remains committed to conducting a transparent, credible, and democratic process that reflects the will of our members nationwide. We urge everyone to await the official announcement from the NEC,” the statement added.

The NDC primary elections were held across the federation to select candidates for various elective positions ahead of the next electoral cycle. The exercise attracted significant participation from party members and aspirants seeking nominations for federal, state, and local government offices.

Political observers say the circulation of unofficial results highlights the growing influence of social media in Nigeria’s political landscape, where information often spreads rapidly before official verification.

As anticipation builds among party members and supporters, the NDC leadership has assured that the official results will be released through established party communication channels once the verification and ratification process is completed.

The development comes amid heightened political activities across the country as parties intensify preparations for upcoming elections.

NDC Postpones Lagos Primaries Ahead of Key Party Exercise

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially postponed its governorship, State House of Assembly, and National Assembly primaries earlier scheduled to hold on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

The announcement was made in an official statement issued by the party’s Lagos State leadership on Thursday, confirming that the primaries will now take place on Friday, May 29, 2026.

The development immediately generated reactions among party members and political observers, as preparations intensify ahead of the crucial internal party exercise.

According to the statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olushile Akinyemi, the postponement followed fresh consultations with stakeholders and logistical considerations surrounding the conduct of the primaries.

The party explained that the adjustment became necessary to allow broader engagement among stakeholders and to ensure the smooth distribution of electoral materials across all local government areas in Lagos State.

“This adjustment has been made to allow for more extensive stakeholder consultations and to give the State Secretariat adequate time to ensure all necessary election materials are properly mobilized,” the statement read.

The Lagos chapter of the NDC also apologized to delegates, aspirants, party members, and supporters who may be inconvenienced by the sudden change in schedule.

Party officials urged members to remain calm and continue supporting the process while preparations continue for the rescheduled primaries.

The statement further stressed the party’s commitment to conducting a transparent, peaceful, and credible primary election capable of strengthening confidence within the party ahead of future political contests.

Participants were advised to monitor the party’s official communication channels for updates regarding accreditation procedures, venue arrangements, and other logistical details ahead of Friday’s exercise.

Political observers believe the postponement may also be linked to ongoing consultations and negotiations among aspirants and influential stakeholders within the Lagos chapter of the party.

Although the NDC did not disclose specific challenges responsible for the postponement, the announcement has already sparked discussions among party loyalists preparing for the primaries.

The governorship, State House of Assembly, and National Assembly primaries are expected to play a significant role in shaping the party’s political direction ahead of upcoming electoral activities in Lagos State.

Attention now shifts to Friday’s rescheduled exercise as party members await the outcome of the consultations and preparations aimed at ensuring a smooth and credible primary process.
