π£οΈβWhen we say check your state budget, this is exactly what we are talking about.β
In 2020, we visited Government Day Secondary School, Diko, Gurara LGA, Niger State, and found the school in a completely dysfunctional and dilapidated state. Meanwhile, this is the only government secondary school serving about 14 different communities, yet students are forced to learn in terrible conditions.
Classrooms have no doors or windows, roofs are collapsing, ceilings ripped off, and many students sit on bare floors during lessons. Even more concerning, the schools lack perimeter fencing, exposing students and staff to serious security threats at a time insecurity remains a major national concern.
In 2025, the school appeared in the Niger State Budget with N457.6m allocated for renovation. According to her 2025 fourth quarter Budget Implementation Report, N400m i.e. 87.4% of the funds has already been disbursed.
But the shocking reality is that there is absolutely no evidence of project ex*****on on ground. No contractor. No ongoing work. No rehabilitation. Nothing.
We visited both the senior secondary school and the relocated junior secondary section over 3km away, and the conditions remain the same, abandoned, unsafe, and neglected.
π§ How can N400m be reportedly spent while children continue learning in collapsing classrooms without furniture or security?
π§ Who received the funds?
π§ Who certified the project performance?
π§ Where exactly was the money spent?
Sadly, this is gradually becoming a disturbing trend across several states. Despite increasing allocations and rising public revenues, citizens continue to see little or no corresponding development in critical sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
We call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and
ICPC Nigeria to urgently investigate this matter and ensure accountability for public funds meant for education development.
Nigeria should not continue budgeting for progress while communities remain trapped in neglect. We must do better.

Dear Governor Ododo Usman Ahmed and The Kogi State Government,
For over 40 years, students of Community Secondary School, Gegu-Beki in Kogi LGA, Kogi State, have continued to learn under the same mud structures built by the community in 1980 without any meaningful renovation or rehabilitation.
Today, the school serves about 500 students from 18 surrounding communities, yet the conditions are heartbreaking. There are no functional chairs or desks, classrooms lack doors and windows, and the school has no perimeter fence despite the growing insecurity across the country.
At a time when communities are increasingly worried about the safety of children, students in this school remain exposed and vulnerable in open, dilapidated classrooms that can barely protect them from weather or security threats.
During a townhall meeting held in May 2026 at the palace of Nyiwo of Gegu-Beki, community stakeholders expressed deep frustration over years of neglect despite repeated appeals for intervention.
How do children learn effectively in collapsing mud classrooms without furniture, windows, doors, or security?
How do we preach quality education while students study in fear and unsafe conditions?
In conjunction with the community, we have written to your office, Senator Karimi Sunday, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, and . D S Aguye, representing Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency, calling for urgent rehabilitation, reconstruction, fencing, and provision of learning facilities for the school.
These children deserve more than survival; they deserve safety, dignity, and a proper learning environment.
