Athletes are different today…….
because the world is different today.
Coaches have always talked about focus….
don’t get distracted….
block out the noise.
But it’s different now.
Today, athletes carry a phone with them almost 24-7.
It pulls at them constantly.
Distracts them constantly.
Especially young athletes that don’t know anything else.
Humans have a hard time being still….
we get bored easily.
We rarely feel that we’re breathing….
or feel the stress in our body.
And phones make this even harder.
So how does this negatively effect athletes?
In a lot of ways, but I’m going to focus on one main problem.
Think about how often we say……
“they’re in the zone.”
We say this when an athlete looks unstoppable.
They’re having the best performance of their career without even trying.
Everything looks effortless.
This can only happen when an athlete is calm.
And I don’t mean just their body being calm.
Their mind and specifically their brain waves need to be calm.
When the brain slows down….
the body is loose and coordinated….
the eyes see everything….
reaction is effortless….
and the game plan is easily remembered.
Constant phone use is the opposite of this.
The phone is a stimulus….
that for most people rarely stops.
So brain waves are always moving a little faster than normal….
and the ability to focus and stay calm under stress gets harder…
and harder….
because the mind and body never get a chance to practice calm.
WHAT WE PRACTICE GROWS STRONGER.
If stimulation is what we practice….
calm and focused will be hard to come by….
especially on game day.
There’s a lot of things we practice with our athletes.
Practicing staying off the phone is becoming really important….
and it’s going to become more and more important….
for all athletes to become as focused as possible…
and to be able to handle any stress that comes their way.

altis & If an athlete runs technically well in training, but falls apart during a high pressure race, what is that telling us?
? Is that a technical issue? A psychological issue? A mechanical issue, whereby there is some musculoskeletal
'dysfunction' that only reveals itself under states of higher arousal?
§ The way in which we answer these questions is through a 'SYSTEMS APPROACH', and this forms the key to the
ALTIS Performance Therapy Methodology.
Our FREE EBOOK 'A Systems Approach to Health & Performance' gives a brief primer of what systems thinking means, and how we can apply it to our current training environments.
