Meet Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Surajo, the First serving Nigerian Army personnel to attain the rank of Professor.
History of Surajo . Lieutenant Colonel (Professor) Abubakar Surajo Imam is a pioneering figure in the Nigerian Army, known as the first serving officer to become a full Professor, specializing in Mechatronics Engineering at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), where he leads the Mechatronics Dept. and Centre for Innovation. Hailing from Katsina State, his career blends military service with high-level academia, earning PhDs from the UK and developing innovative tech solutions for the Army, making significant strides in military engineering and research.
Early Life & Education
Born: June 22, 1976, in Kankia, Katsina State, Nigeria.
Primary: Sultan Bello Primary School, Kaduna (1982-1987).
Secondary: Government College Katsina (1988-1991).
Undergraduate: Mechanical Engineering, Bayero University, Kano (2001).
Postgraduate: M.Sc. (2009) & PhD (2014) in Mechatronics & Robotics, Newcastle University, UK.
Military Career
Commissioned: Joined the Nigerian Army via Short Service Combatant Course 32, assigned to the Corps of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (EME).
Conversion: Later converted to Regular Commission.
Key Roles: Served in various EME units, including 1 Base Workshop and HQ EME Corps.
Academic Achievements
First Army Professor: Became the first serving Nigerian Army personnel to attain the rank of Professor, effective October 2022.
NDA Leadership:
Spearheaded the Mechatronics Engineering Department and the Centre for Innovation & Creativity at the NDA.
Research: Conducts research with institutions like Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU).
Innovations Developed and deployed several technological solutions for both military and civilian use, integrating mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering.

BREAKING: FG Orders Closure Of 41 Federal Unity Colleges Over Security Concerns
The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of 41 Federal Unity Colleges over rising security concerns.
The directive was issued through a circular dated November 21, 2025 from the Federal Ministry of Education.
