Today's Lesson Topic:
Correct uses of 'will and 'would'
'Will' and 'would' are auxiliary verbs. 'Will' is a present - tense auxiliary verb while 'would' is the past - tense form of will.
Uses of will:
The verb - will - is mostly used in English Grammar to express:
1: Beliefs about the present or the future.
Examples:
i. Ushie will be in the gym now (present)
ii. We will have to take a cab else we will be late to school today
2: To talk about what we want to do or are willing to do.
Examples:
i. I will see you tomorrow
ii. Ask Shade, perhaps she will lend you some money for the trip
3: To make promises, offers or requests. Examples:
i. I will give you money for your soap tomorrow
ii. I will bring some goodies for you when coming back
Use of would:
As I said earlier, 'would' is the past-tense of 'will'. 'Would', as the past-tense of 'will', is often used to
1: describe past beliefs about the future.
Examples:
i. I thought we would be late to school, so we would have to take a cab.
2: Talk about what we wanted to do or were willing to do.
Examples:
i. I would have gone with them except that the vehicle wouldn't contain all of us.
ii. We would not (wouldn't) have been late, so we wouldn't have taken the cab
3: To make polite requests.
Note that in making polite request, both 'will'and'would' can be used and would be correct grammatically.
Examples:
ia. Will you help me with that, please?
ib. Would you help me with that, please?
iia. Would you, please, help me with that?
Hope you get value from this post.
