Sewing terms every every beginner should know👇

✂️ 1. Notch
A notch is a small mark (usually a tiny cut or chalk mark) on fabric pieces.
👉 Purpose:

It helps you match pieces correctly when sewing.

👉 Example:
When joining a sleeve to an armhole, the notches tell you this part meets this part.

🧠 Think of it like a “guide point” so you don’t sew wrongly.

📏 2. Drafting
Drafting means drawing your pattern on paper (or directly on fabric) using measurements.

👉 It is the foundation of sewing.

👉 Example:
Before you cut a blouse, you draft the shape using bust, waist, shoulder, etc.

🧠 No drafting = guessing = bad fit.

🧵 3. Hem
A hem is the finished edge of a garment (usually folded and sewn).

👉 Found at:
Bottom of gowns
Sleeves
Trousers

👉 Purpose:
Makes clothing neat
Prevents fabric from fraying

🧠 Raw edge = rough work
Hemmed edge = professional finish

👗 4. Thigh
The thigh is the upper part of the leg.

👉 In sewing: Used when making trousers, skirts, or dresses.
👉 Measurement: Around the fullest part of the upper leg.

🧠 Important for comfort—too tight = can’t walk well 😅

👖 5. Crotch
The crotch is the area where the two legs of a trouser meet.

👉 Very important in trouser drafting.

👉 Includes:
Front crotch
Back crotch

👉 If done wrong:
Pulling
Tightness
Discomfort

🧠 This is where beginners make plenty mistakes—so pay attention here.

🧶 6. Weave
Weave refers to how threads are arranged in fabric.

👉 Types:
Plain weave
Twill weave
Satin weave

👉 Why it matters:
Affects stretch
Affects strength
Affects how you cut fabric

🧠 Also relates to grain line (direction you must cut fabric)

🔥 EXTRA TERMS EVERY BEGINNER MUST KNOW

✂️ Seam
Where two fabrics are joined together.

📐 Seam Allowance
Extra fabric left for sewing (usually ½ inch or 1 inch).

👉 Without it, your cloth will shrink after sewing.

📌 Grain Line
The direction of the fabric threads.
👉 Always cut along grain for a neat, balanced outfit.

🧷 Dart
A fold sewn into fabric to shape it (especially for bust or waist).

🧵 Stitch
The actual thread line made by your machine or hand.

📏 Ease
Extra space added so the cloth is not too tight.

🚨 LET'S TALK ABOUT DARTS…THE SECRET BEHIND A WELL FITTED OUTFITS

You see that difference between a “just okay” dress and a “WOW, this fits perfectly” dress?

👉 The magic is often in the DARTS.

If you’re a beginner in sewing and you don’t understand darts yet…

you’re honestly missing a BIG piece of the puzzle.

✂️ What is a Dart?

A dart is a folded and stitched part of a fabric that helps shape the cloth to fit the body perfectly.

Think of it as…

👉 The architect of fitting in sewing.

📌 Types of Darts you should know and their uses:

✔️ Bust Dart – helps the fabric sit well around the bust

✔️ Waist Dart – gives that snatched, fitted look

✔️ Shoulder Dart – shapes the upper chest area

✔️ Armhole Dart – used instead of bust dart sometimes

✔️ French Dart – long dart from waist to bust (very classy 👌)

💡 What are Darts used for?

✨ To shape garments to the body
✨ To eliminate excess fabric
✨ To give that clean, professional finishing
✨ To enhance curves (yes! that fitted look you love 😉)

👗 Clothes that NEED darts:

✔️ Fitted gowns
✔️ Blouses & shirts
✔️ Pencil skirts
✔️ Corset-style dresses

🚫 Clothes that DON’T really need darts:

✔️ Loose gowns (boubou, kaftan, etc.)
✔️ Oversized styles
✔️ Flowy dresses
✔️ Some children’s wear

If your outfit always looks “somehow”…
Check it well — you might be skipping your darts 👀

FOR BEGINNERS.

Measurements to be divided by 4
👇
bust circumference -e.g bust 40÷4=10

Hip circumference

waist circumference

underbust circumference

measurements to be divided by 2
👇

shoulder -e.g shoulder 16÷2=8

armhole
Round sleeve
Ni**le to Ni**le.

Now these are some formulas to get some measurements:

bust span or Ni**le to Ni**le =bust circuference ÷4 minus 1.5

Armholes for any size
bust circumference ÷6 + 1.5

crotch depth for trousers=
Hip circumference ÷4
for jumpsuit or high waist=
Hip cirumference ÷3

Go thtough it and know it.
