After glaucoma took his sight 7 years ago, his spirit went with it. Anxiety and depression moved in. He became antisocial, lost his ability to communicate in sign language (mutism), and attempted to take his own life multiple times.

Then he showed up at .
knew there was no physical or verbal means of communication, but we took him in anyway. Simply because we understood the power that water holds. And his healing began from Day 1.

You can find the rest of his journey in earlier posts.

Deji, we are so proud of every single one of your accomplishments. Drop him some love now in the comments.

Pool Safety Alert: Eyes on the Water, Always❗️

Adults, this one is for you.
Having lifeguards, trainers, and everyone else around the pool doesn’t mean you can clock out. Put the phone away, no notification is worth a life. Even the best swimming instructors can’t replace a watching adult. Your role is very important and compliments the Instructor’s job.

But here’s the other hard conversation:
What do you do when relatives or friends aren't supportive of your child’s swim journey?

🔹 The Western approach (courtesy of our Super Hero guest Jacob) – clear boundaries, even cutting off ties with family and friends if necessary.
🔹 The Naija style (courtesy of our very own Swim Guru) – inviting them to be present and experience the joy and fun along with the child and have a chat with professionals, strategic patience, family diplomacy, and redirecting the narrative without losing your peace.

The conversation is just getting started. We keep banishing ignorance and igniting knowledge, one post at a time.

Stay locked in for the next drop on SID Africa’s Clarity Hub. Watch every part. You’ll learn a lot.

And please: send this to every parent you know.

Swim Guru of Swim in 1 Day SID Africa is also an experienced infant and toddler swim instructor. But here’s the irony: while he taught many young children in Europe, since moving to Nigeria, he has only taught kids aged 3 and above. Why? Many Nigerian parents are unaware of the importance of early swim education, and are terrified to enroll children from 6 months to 3 years old.

Yet the numbers speak for themselves:

· Toddlers at risk: Children under 5 account for nearly 25% of global drowning deaths. Lack of adult supervision is the leading cause.
· Flood impact (specific to infants): A 2024 study found that flooding in Africa increases infant mortality. In Nigeria, flood exposure is statistically linked to higher infant death rates in the years following a disaster.

We brought in one of the world’s best infant and toddler swim instructors to answer parents’ toughest questions and ease their fears.
