The Gaboon viper, Bitis gabonica is one of Africa’s most striking and dangerous snakes. If you’ve ever seen one, you don’t forget it.
It is a heavy-bodied viper with a broad, triangular head and a pattern that looks like a geometric painting. Think rectangles, chevrons, and hourglasses in brown, cream, pink, and purple. That pattern isn’t just pretty - it’s camouflage. In leaf litter, it disappears completely. Adults average 1.2-1.8 m long and can get thick, up to 8-10 kg.

The Gaboon Viper can be found in rainforests and savannas of Sub-Saharan Africa - From Guinea east to Uganda, and south through the Congo Basin to Zambia and northern South Africa. It is a sit-and-wait predator, so it spends most of its time motionless on the forest floor.

This snake holds the record for longest fangs of any venomous snake - up to 5 cm. The venom is cytotoxic (kills and damages the body cells) and hemotoxic (attacks the blood and circulatory system). A bite causes rapid swelling, pain, blistering, and tissue damage. It can also affect blood clotting and circulation. It is not quick to bite, but when it does, it holds on and injects a large volume of venom. Antivenom exists and treatment works if you get to a hospital fast.

Surprisingly calm for how dangerous they are, Gaboon vipers are ambush hunters. They rely on camouflage and won’t move unless you step on them. They eat rodents, birds, and small antelope, using those long fangs to deliver venom deep into prey.

They are ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to live young. A large female can drop 20-60 babies at once.

Beautiful, slow, and extremely well-camouflaged, most bites happen because someone steps on one without seeing it. In the wild, give it space and it will do the same.
