“The first football match I watched on television that I can remember was the 1976 Challenge Cup final, featuring Rangers International F.C of Enugu vs Alyufsalam Rocks of Ilorin.

Rangers, in their immaculate all-white outfit, walked onto the pitch to incredible shouts from everyone in the house.

What has remained with me to this day was the reaction to Rangers’ first goal. It was like a wall of noise collapsed inside the living room as these grown men around me celebrated the goal. I loved it. Rangers won 2-0.

They also won my heart forever from that day.”

Laughter, Leather and Losses by Calvin Emeka Onwuka 28/10/2025

October 10 1981.

"Algeria came to Lagos for the 1982 World Cup qualifier - 14 months after the 1980 AFCON final. They absolutely trashed the hosts' living room and left in ruins, the international careers of Tunde Bamidele and Christian Chukwu.

That 2-0 defeat was my 2nd heartbreak as a child and it is burnt into my consciousness like a the bad scar it is."
