10 Ways to Study Effectively for an Exam and Ace it.

Are you confused about the steps to follow to study effectively for an exam? Have you lost all hope in your ability to prepare for a standardized test and ace it at once? Read on.

Exam week can be the most stressful time for a student, whether in high school, undergraduate school or post-graduate school. Experts at NaijaTutorial have compiled the following tips to help you study effectively and ace any exams.

1. Give yourself enough time to study: - it is common today for students to leave their study until the eleventh hour. Don’t do that! While some students do seem to thrive on last-minute cramming, it's widely accepted that this is not the best way to approach an exam. To help sort out your time management, set up a timetable for your study. You may write down the number of exams you have and the days on which you have to write them. Then organize your study accordingly. You may want to give some exams more study time than others, so find a balance that you feel comfortable with.

2. Use visual aids: - visual aids such as diagrams can help you visualize information which will be difficult to describe. This creates a visual memory in your mind which can be recalled in an exam. You may even be asked to draw or label diagrams such as the human heart in your exam so get practicing! Visual aids can also be helpful when revising. At the start of a topic, challenge yourself to write down everything you already know about a topic - and then highlight where the gaps lie. Closer to the exam, condense your revision notes into one-page diagrams. Getting your ideas down in this brief format can then help you to quickly recall everything you need to know during the exam.

3. Visualize:-If you're a visual learner, it can help to create mind maps or diagrams to visualize how the concepts you're learning relate to one another. It is especially beneficial when learning concepts that build upon the understanding of one another, like in science courses.

4. Teach others: - yes, learning by teaching is a method that really works. It could be your classmates, parents, brothers or sisters. Never hesitate to share your knowledge with others. As the saying goes ‘givers never lack, ‘it means the more you share what you know with others, the better your understanding of it. So, if you work with a study buddy and explain concepts to one another, you're re-learning the material all over again. It's a great way to reinforce what you've learned and help someone in the meantime!

5. Eradicate distraction, if possible: - If you must study effectively, it is important to reduce distraction to the barest minimum. Your smartphone can be a great source of distraction if not used wisely. So, it is important you reduce the amount of time you use on social media like Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter.

6. Overcome procrastination: - Procrastination often creeps in because you’re having trouble starting a task – it seems too hard, too boring or maybe too much. Our advice? Break it down! Small, achievable steps with a time limit are an effective way to chip away at bigger tasks and stop procrastinating. Still having trouble starting? Say to yourself you’ll sit down and commit just 10 minutes. This will help break the inertia of putting something off. Aim for starting, not perfection, and remember that something is better than nothing. Busting procrastination and staying on task means you won’t feel guilty about not studying when it’s time to take a break.

7. Reorganize your notes:-Evaluate and reorganize your notes into what’s important, outlining important concepts, formulas dates, and definitions, so they’re easy to understand.

8. Organize your study space: - Ensure you have enough space to spread your textbooks and notes out. Have you got enough light? Is your chair comfortable? Are your computer games out of sight? Try and get rid of all distractions, and make sure you feel as comfortable and able to focus as possible. For some people, this may mean almost complete silence, for others, background music helps. Some of us need everything completely tidy and organized in order to concentrate, while others thrive in a more cluttered environment. Think about what works for you, and take the time to get it right.

9. Keep healthy: - When exams come around, somehow there never seems enough time for the basic stuff like sleep and exercise. Taking care of your health and wellbeing will really help you study at your best by improving your memory, mood and energy levels, and keeping those stress levels down. When it comes to sleep it’s probably no surprise that the main aim is to get enough – seven to nine hours is a good benchmark. For the best quality sleep try to avoid screens (computer, mobile, tablet, TV) for about an hour before bed and caffeine for 4-6 hours, and give yourself a bit of time to unwind before bedtime. If you’ve tried but can’t sleep, leave your room and do something relaxing until you feel sleepy. Staying hydrated, eating three meals, and sticking to healthy snacks throughout the day will give you the fuel you need to focus. If you’re feeling a bit lethargic, try getting outside for some fresh air and get moving. A good aim is 20-30 minutes of exercise but even a walk around the block between study sessions will do you good!

10. Take a break: - Making the most of taking a good break from study will help you be more productive when you do study. Take regular and rejuvenating breaks away from your study area and do something different. Exams are a lot of work but remember to have fun, unwind and see friends in moderation too. Studying hard means having reasonable goals and rewarding yourself when you achieve them.
