What made the material special was how quickly it broke down. Unlike ordinary plastic, which can remain in the environment for hundreds of years, Sandra's bioplastic biodegrades in soil within two to three months. In water, it can disappear in about a week.

The material is also completely non-toxic and does not require crude oil to produce. It is safe for both humans and animals.
