Did you know that the land that was once Maroko is now filled with some of the most expensive real estate in Lagos?

Maroko was a poor neighborhood in the '90s before it was demolished by the Lagos State Government.

Now, that poor neighborhood is Oniru Estate, and parts of Lekki Phase 1 and Victoria Island.

Victims of the displacement feel scarred, while others argue the economic development was worth the pain.

In an attempt to get roadside sellers off the streets, the Lagos State government built them shops. The problem with this initiative was that the shops were too expensive for the roadside market people.

To solve this problem, the government tried to get the market people access to micro-finance loans, but the interest rate was just too much for the sellers to take on.

The roadside market is a very informal part of Lagos consisting of people with minimal education, and often out of the banking system. In addition, the margin on their market is small making their profit very minimal.

The opposing realities between the state government and the street sellers is why Lagos is still filled with roadside sellers till this day.
