Leukemias 1

Leukemias. Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. White blood cells are responsible for fighting infections and are also called "leukocytes", hence the name "leukemia" for the cancer originating from them.
There are two types of leukemia, these are
a) Acute leukemia which occurs in children. This will be the focus of our discuss.
b) Chronic leukemia, the form of leukemia found in adults
Acute leukemia is a form of leukemia in which immature cells known as "blasts" are found in the blood. The bone marrow is like a blood cell producing factory, responsible for producing all the blood cells (white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets). Because of the rapid and uncontrolled multiplication of these white blood cells, the production of the other blood cells which are red blood cells and platelets is suppressed. This leads to reduced amount of red blood cells (known as "anemia") and platelets (known as "thrombocytopenia").
Also, these abnormally large number of white blood cells being produced in leukemia are useless white blood cells, as they are not capable of fighting infections.
