"You paid for the shipping.
You packed the box carefully.
You handed it over and waited.
Then the news came β
your shipment has been seized at customs.
Not delayed. Not rerouted.
SEIZED.
And the worst part about it?
Most of the time β it was completely avoidable.
Customs seizure is one of the most painful and most misunderstood things that happens in international shipping. And because most logistics companies never explain it properly, senders keep making the same costly mistakes over and over again.
Today we are going to change that.
Here are the most common reasons shipments get seized β broken down by what actually happens in the UK, USA and Canada. π
REASON 1 β WRONG OR MISSING DOCUMENTATION
This is the number one cause of seizures across all three destinations.
Every international shipment requires a commercial invoice, a packing list, and a correctly filled airway bill at minimum. If any of these documents are missing, inconsistent, or contain errors β customs will hold your package.
In the UK specifically, HMRC requires that your commercial invoice clearly states the country of origin, the exact description of goods, the quantity, and the declared value in the correct currency. A vague description like "food items" or "personal effects" on a commercial shipment is enough to trigger an inspection and a potential seizure.
In the USA, US Customs and Border Protection β CBP β cross-references your declared contents against your invoice value. Any inconsistency, however small, raises an immediate flag.
In Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency β CBSA β is particularly thorough with food and organic products. Missing phytosanitary certificates or health declarations on food shipments are among the leading causes of seizures on the Lagos to Toronto and Calgary routes.
REASON 2 β SHIPPING RESTRICTED OR PROHIBITED ITEMS
What is completely legal to buy and sell in Nigeria may be restricted or outright prohibited in the destination country.
In the UK β certain foodstuffs, particularly meat products and some dairy items, face strict import restrictions under post-Brexit biosecurity rules. Items like fresh or dried bush meat, certain smoked fish, and unprocessed animal products have been seized at UK borders repeatedly.
In the USA β the FDA and USDA regulate food imports strictly. Certain Nigerian food items including some dried pepper varieties, certain herbal products and supplements, and homemade or unlabelled food products have been flagged and seized at US entry points. If your skincare or health product contains ingredients not approved by the FDA β it will not clear.
In Canada β CFIA, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, has specific rules around plant-based products including dried grains, seeds, and certain spices. Shipping these without proper documentation or in quantities that trigger commercial classification will result in seizure.
REASON 3 β UNDERVALUING YOUR GOODS
This is the mistake that feels smart in the moment and costs you everything later.
Declaring that your β¦200,000 worth of skincare products is worth $50 to avoid import duties is not a loophole β it is a customs violation. Customs officers in all three countries are trained specifically to identify undervalued shipments. They have market data. They know what things cost.
When your declared value does not match the market value of what is in your box β your shipment is held. In serious cases it is seized permanently. In the USA this can also trigger fines against the receiver.
REASON 4 β POOR OR VAGUE ITEM DESCRIPTIONS
Writing "gifts" or "used personal items" on a commercial shipment is one of the fastest ways to invite a full customs inspection.
Every item in your package needs a specific description β the product name, the material it is made from, the quantity, and the unit value. "Clothing" is not enough. "10 pieces of women's ankara fabric dress, handmade, cotton blend, $25 per piece" β that is a proper description. The more specific you are, the less reason customs has to open your box.
REASON 5 β NO REGULATORY CERTIFICATION FOR REGULATED PRODUCTS
If you are shipping skincare, food products, health supplements, or anything that goes on or into someone's body β you need the right certifications before that package leaves Nigeria.
For skincare shipping to the UK and Canada β NAFDAC certification strengthens your documentation significantly. For food products going to the USA β FDA registration for your product category is increasingly required. Without these, regulated products face automatic inspection and high seizure risk regardless of how well everything else is documented.
The truth about customs seizure is this β
It is almost never bad luck.
It is almost always missing information, wrong documentation, or a restricted item that nobody flagged before the package left Lagos.
And by the time you find out β the package is already held. The money is already spent. The customer is already waiting.
This is exactly why at NADA Logistics, we review your shipment documentation before anything moves.
We flag restricted items before they become seized items.
We make sure your declarations are accurate, your paperwork is complete, and customs in the UK, USA and Canada have every reason to clear your package β and no reason to hold it.
If you are planning a shipment and you want to make sure it is properly documented before it leaves Lagos β drop DOCS in the comments or send us a DM and we will walk you through everything.
And if this helped you understand something you did not know before β share it with someone who ships regularly. This information costs logistics companies nothing to share. We share it anyway. π¦π§‘

"You planned everything.
The visa. The apartment. The job. The flight.
But nobody prepares you for the moment you land and realise β you left more behind than you packed.
Relocating is one of the biggest things a person can do. And for Nigerians especially, it comes with a unique kind of weight that people who haven't done it simply do not understand.
The food you suddenly cannot find. The family WhatsApp group that is now three to six hours behind you. The cold that hits different when there is nobody familiar nearby. The accent people ask you to repeat. The loneliness that shows up even when life on paper looks perfect.
But also β the growth. The opportunities. The version of yourself you discover when you are forced to figure things out alone.
Relocation is complicated. Beautiful and hard at the same time.
So we want to ask genuinely β
What was the hardest thing about relocating for you? π
Was it leaving family behind? Starting over socially? The paperwork that never seemed to end? Missing Nigerian food? Something nobody talks about?
Tell us in the comments. No wrong answers here.
And if you have not relocated yet but you are planning to β what scares you most about the process?
This is a safe space. Talk to us. π§‘

If you're planning to ship foodstuff from Nigeria to the UK, USA & Canada β please read this before you pack a single item.
Every week we speak to Nigerians whose food shipments have been seized at UK customs. Not because they did something dishonest β but because they simply didn't know the rules.
Here is what you need to know π
YOUR SHIPMENT MUST CONTAIN ONLY ALLOWED ITEMS
WHAT IS ALLOWED INTO THE UK:
β
Dried and processed foods β stockfish, crayfish, egusi, ogbono, dry pepper
β
Palm oil and other plant-based oils (properly sealed and declared)
β
Packaged and processed snacks β chin chin, plantain chips, puff puff (commercially sealed)
β
Dried grains and seeds β beans, rice, melon seeds (must be declared)
β
Fresh meat, fresh fruits & vegetables β now exportable via Frozen Shipment (must be properly frozen, sealed, and declared)
THE RULES MOST PEOPLE MISS:
π Every item must be declared accurately on the shipping documentation β hiding food items causes seizures even when the food itself is allowed
π Packaging must prevent spillage β loose or leaking items get flagged immediately at customs
π Fresh/frozen items must be properly packaged in insulated, temperature-controlled packaging to meet customs standards
π Commercial quantities need different documentation than personal parcels β if you're sending large amounts, tell us upfront so we prepare correctly
This is exactly why at Nada Logistics we guide every customer through the full documentation process before anything leaves Lagos. One conversation with us could save you from losing your entire shipment.
π Send us a message today β we handle pickup from your office or location anywhere in Lagos and walk you through everything step by step.

There was a knock at his door.
He opened it to find a delivery man standing
there β and two big boxes on the floor beside him.
He checked the label. His name. His address.
His phone number.
Two packages from Nigeria.
That he never ordered.
He was still standing there confused when
his phone rang.
His mother.
"I got a message that you received your
packages," she said quietly.
"Did you like them?"
It had been six months since he relocated
to the UK.
Six months of adjusting to the weather.
Six months of overpriced African store food
that never quite tastes the same.
Six months of phone calls home where he
tried to sound okay.
His mother heard everything he wasn't saying.
Three weeks ago she reached out to us β
a mother who had never shipped internationally
in her life β asking if she could send her
son some food from Lagos.
We said yes.
We told her exactly what she could send
and what to avoid at customs. We came to
pick up the packages. We handled every
detail of the packaging and the paperwork.
And last Friday β her son in the UK opened
two boxes to find his favourite ogbono,
egusi, stockfish, premium Orion crayfish
and finely refined palm oil from his village.
He called her back crying. π’π³π¬
