"Educate Yourself" — BNXN Fires Back After Fat Joe Claims Jamaica Started Afrobeats

On April 23, 2026, Nigerian artist BNXN (formerly Buju) took to social media to "educate" American rapper Fat Joe following controversial remarks about the origins of Afrobeats.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Joe and Jada podcast alongside dancehall legend Buju Banton, Fat Joe asserted, “Jamaica started Afrobeats, even though everything comes from Africa”. He also claimed credit for "bullying" BNXN into changing his former stage name to avoid disrespecting Banton's legacy.

BNXN's response joined a wave of backlash from Nigerian fans and music experts who corrected the historical inaccuracy, noting that modern Afrobeats developed in West Africa (specifically Nigeria and Ghana) and was heavily influenced by Fela Kuti's Afrobeat.

While acknowledging the influence of Caribbean sound systems, critics like Adesope have publicly disagreed with the rapper's "bold and unfounded" claim.
