“I almost quit fish farming because of this mistake…”
When I first started my fish farming journey, I was so happy to put into practice what I had learnt.
So I stocked my pond with about 350 fingerlings as a beginner and for my first time. I had just a pond in my backyard.
I was so eager and full of excitement to see the fish start growing but I did something wrong that cost me the loss of half of the fish and I learned from my mistake.
I kept some of the fingerlings in a big bowl.
At first, everything looked fine. The fish were active, feeding well, and growing. I felt proud.
Then slowly… things changed.
The rate of feeding was reduced, they were not active again and they stopped growing while the ones in the pond were growing faster then one day, they all died and I was left with the ones in the pond.
It was painful, I cried 😭 It felt like all my hard work was going down the drain.
That was when I learned the hard truth:
👉 Overcrowding kills fish.
Too many fish in one pond means:
Low oxygen
Faster water pollution
Increased stress
Disease spread
I lost a lot… but I gained experience.
Today, I stock properly, monitor water quality, and give my fish space to thrive.

Smart feeding is profitable feeding
SPOT FEEDING AND GRADUAL FEEDING
In fish farming, effective feeding is one of the most important factors that determine growth, water quality, and overall pond performance.
One recommended method is spot feeding. This means selecting a specific area in your pond where feed is consistently applied. By feeding at a dedicated spot, you can easily monitor the fish’s response, observe their appetite, and detect any changes in behaviour early.
“Another essential practice is gradual feeding. Instead of pouring large portions of feed at once, introduce the feed in small portions. Watch how the fish is responding if they eat actively, you can add more. If the feed starts settling or floating untouched, stop immediately.
Overfeeding does not improve growth, rather it increases waste. Excess feed sinks to the bottom, decomposes, and pollutes the water. Poor water quality leads to stress, disease, slow growth, and unnecessary loss.
Remember, good feeding management is good farm management. Feed with intention, observe consistently, and maintain clean water for a healthy, profitable pond.
