A fresh wave of criticism has been directed at the Benue State Government as opposition voices accuse the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia of focusing on defending the past rather than addressing the present challenges confronting citizens.

According to the critics, the current realities facing the people of Benue in June 2026 include rising hardship, insecurity, and difficulties in meeting basic needs such as feeding, paying school fees, and securing communities.

The opposition further alleged that the Alia-led administration has struggled with internal political divisions and poor management of relationships within the ruling party, arguing that such conflicts have negatively affected effective governance in the state.

In the education sector, concerns were raised over the indefinite strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, formerly Benue State University. The critics alleged that the strike, which commenced in June 2026, was a result of unresolved issues including staff welfare, unpaid promotion arrears, and pension concerns.

They maintained that the continued closure of lecture halls has placed the academic future of thousands of students at risk, calling on the state government to urgently address the situation.
