ASUSS-Niger State Chapter
ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS (ASUSS) NIGERIA
An approved trade union long overdue.
29/06/2026
The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Niger State Chapter, is deeply saddened by the disturbing reports emerging from different parts of our country shortly after our members joined the National Executive Council (NEC) in observing the National Day of Prayers against insecurity and attacks on schools.
It is heartbreaking that reports indicate a public basic/secondary school in a community within Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State was set ablaze. Equally disturbing are reports from Borno State, where candidates writing the NECO examination were allegedly disrupted by terrorist activities, and the tragic report from Kogi State of a female teacher who reportedly lost her life after a brutal assault.
These unfortunate incidents reinforce the concerns that informed our nationwide prayers. They are painful reminders that our schools, teachers and learners remain vulnerable to insecurity, violence and criminal attacks.
Education is the foundation of every progressive society. Any attack on schools, teachers or students is an attack on the future of Nigeria. No nation can achieve sustainable development when its classrooms are turned into battlefields and its educators are forced to work under fear and uncertainty.
ASUSS Niger State Chapter therefore renews its passionate appeal to the Federal Government, State Governments, security agencies and all relevant stakeholders to take urgent and decisive steps to secure our schools and communities. We also call on traditional rulers, religious leaders, parents and community members to support collective efforts aimed at protecting educational institutions and preserving the future of our children.
While we remain committed to prayers for divine intervention, we firmly believe that prayers must be complemented by practical actions, improved security, intelligence gathering and stronger protection of educational facilities across the country.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the affected school communities. We stand in solidarity with every teacher and learner facing insecurity and reaffirm our commitment to advocating for safe, secure and accessible education at all levels.
Together, let us protect our schools, safeguard our teachers, secure our children and preserve the future of our nation.
