New Fraud Scheme Reported in Osogbo as Shop Owner and Scavenger (Aboki) Fall Victim

A new form of scam has surfaced in Osogbo, prompting warnings for business owners and shop attendants to remain vigilant.

According to accounts from those involved, a neatly dressed, middle-aged man visited a restaurant and drinks shop near the Technical College area, posing as a genuine customer. He negotiated the price of 15 packs of bottled water and briefly stepped out.

He later returned with a scavenger popularly known as Aboki and was speaking to him in Hausa, a conversation the shop owner could not understand, while interacting with her in Yoruba while the Aboki too could not understand.

The man then handed the shop owner a mobile phone, asking her to save her number on it, claiming that the people purchasing the water might need future supplies. He also paid for the water.

While the shop owner was still counting the money, the man turned back to the scavenger, spoke briefly in Hausa, and the scavenger stepped away.

Moments later, the man asked the shop owner to return the money and his phone, saying he would be right back. He never returned.

Unknown to the shop owner, the fraudster had earlier collected ₦52,000 from the scavenger (Aboki) under the guise of selling iron scraps to him and told him the shop he brought him was where the iron would be picked up. The phone he handed over was also the scavenger’s.

When the scavenger returned and couldn’t find the man, he confronted the shop owner, believing she had received both his phone and his money.

Despite her explanations, the confusion led him to report the matter at Dugbe Police Station, resulting in her arrest.

The situation was eventually resolved through the intervention of the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, and the Divisional Police Officer.

Authorities urge residents and business operators to stay alert, as the fraudster is still at large and may be operating within the state.
