The study is a descriptive case report to assess the strategies for the control of diabetes mellitus among the aged 45 years and above attending Imo Specialist Hospital Umuguma. Data collection was collected using a well-structured, self-administered questionnaire. Analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The data generated from the study was presented in the form of tables and analyzed as descriptive frequencies, percentages and cross tabulations. The study survey revealed that greater percent (46%) of the respondents were in the age range of 45-54years, married (66.1%), and attained tertiary level of education (43.8%). High proportion (79.9%) of the respondents were Christians, Igbos (15%) civil servants (25.3%) petty traders (24%), and majority (96.4%) had knowledge of diabetes; 53.4% had family history of diabetes; 47.4% suffered type 2 diabetes. Survey have it that the (26.4%) of the respondents regularly check for glucose. Analysis equally exposed that use of diabetes pills was very effective than insulin injection in the control of diabetes; again, cutting sugar and refined carbs from diet (33.8%), cutting intake of processed food and optimizing vitamin D in diet were very effective dietary approach to diabetic control. To high degree, Moringa leaves (56%), Cinnamon leaves (28%), and Flax (16%) were very effective local remedies to diabetic control. Result also showed that, to a high range, drinking enough water (42.6%), regular exercise (25.9%), avoiding of sedentary behaviours (24.1%) were very effective lifestyle modifications to diabetic control. It is recommended that the federal government should embark on free testing outreach to the public, so as to ensure people know their sugar level and how to prevent this non communicable disease that is epidemic now.
