What does Psalm 22v1 mean?
Psalm 22:1 is a verse that is significant to the people of God. It reads, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you far from saving me, far from my cries of anguish?" These were among the last words spoken by Jesus before his death, as recorded in Matthew 27:46. By quoting this verse, Jesus fulfilled the words of the psalmist David. While we cannot be certain why Jesus said these words, there are several possibilities. Perhaps he was emphasizing that his Father (God) would not intervene in his death. Or, he may have been highlighting his innocence. Alternatively, he may have been trying to help his followers focus on the reason why God allowed him to die in this manner. Regardless of the reason, Jesus understood that what he was experiencing was part of God's will for him. Shortly after quoting this psalm, Jesus said, "It is finished."
