While serving in Ibadan, I stayed at a priest’s house. One day, one of the priest’s workers, asked to borrow my car. He needed it to apologize to a woman’s car he had accidentally hit early that Sunday morning. I hesitated at first but eventually agreed, as I also needed to stop by FoodCo to buy bottled water.

After getting what I needed, he drove us to the woman’s house—who turned out to be Temi’s mother—so he could apologize. As soon as I stepped out of the car, a dog came charging at me, barking furiously. Terrified, I jumped back into the car, muttering my mantra: “The fear of dogs is the beginning of wisdom.” The commotion brought Temi outside, and he stepped in to calm the dog and save me from my panic. That was the first time we met, and I remember being struck by his presence. We had a brief conversation, though I can’t recall exactly what we talked about. What I do remember clearly is leaving that day with a big smile on my face, feeling like I had just met someone special.
