5 tips to protect your business from cyber crime

1. Ensure you have anti-virus software installed on all devices and that it is automatically updated.

2. Ensure you have firewalls in place and that they are properly configured. If unsure, seek advice.

3. Consider blocking users from visiting inappropriate or unrequired websites – these are often the source of common attacks.

4. Don't open emails from addresses you don't recognise. Similarly, don't click on links or open attachments unless from a trusted source.

5. Regularly backup important data. Never work from the backup in case your computer is compromised. Store backups offline and on separate devices.

Finance officer for the Bristol and South Gloucestershire Circuit of the Methodist Church, Emily Eden, said the attack had a huge effect.

She said: "I lost everything I'd been working on for the past six years. They wanted money from us to get our data back but we refused to give in to their demands."
