What You Need to Know About Electricity Disconnection in Nigeria.
If your electricity gets disconnected, it’s important to know your rights and what the law says. According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Rules 2007, there are clear steps a distribution company (DisCo) must follow after cutting off your power.

What happens after disconnection?

Once a DisCo disconnects your electricity, they are required to leave a written notice at your premises, which includes:

The date and time of disconnection.
The reason for the disconnection.
Steps you can take to reconnect the electricity.
The DisCo’s contact details.
Do they need to give notice before disconnecting?

Contrary to popular belief, the DisCo is not required to give you notice before they disconnect your electricity. The notice only needs to be provided after the disconnection, explaining why it happened and how to get your power restored.

This rule ensures that you’re informed post-disconnection but doesn't require advance warning. If your electricity is cut off, look for the written notice to understand the reason and the steps to reconnect.

Staying aware of these rules helps you understand your rights as an electricity consumer in Nigeria.

In the end, Mr. Uche had to pay everything—the settlement and the interest that had piled up—simply because he chose to ignore the letters.

In business and legal matters, silence isn’t golden. Always respond when you’re supposed to, or it could cost you later.
