Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr, a towering figure in contemplative cinema whose long takes and bleak black-and-white epics reshaped the art form, has died at the age of 70. 🕊️
Tarr emerged from grassroots beginnings in Hungary in the late 1970s to international prominence with films like Damnation, his breakthrough in 1988, and Sátántangó, a hypnotic seven-hour exploration of dissolution and despair that has been enshrined as one of the great achievements of world cinema.

His unique cinematic language of extended single shots, minimal editing and meditative pacing distilled a somber, reflective vision of human existence that influenced generations of filmmakers and helped define the slow cinema movement.
Working closely with novelist László Krasznahorkai, Tarr made films such as Werckmeister Harmóniák (now screening as part of LAB Suggestions and The Turin Horse, his prize-winning final feature.
He leaves behind a body of work that forever stretched cinema’s sense of time, patience, and moral gravity. 🇭🇺

You felt it too: a little recap of the festive opening of the exhibition of Danique Jaspers ( ) here at LAB111!
Danique’s analogue photographs, paired with lines from films like Past Lives, Before Sunrise and Call Me by Your Name, breathe a quiet kind of longing. They speak softly of missed chances, parallel lives, and what could have been. Images that linger like a dream you almost remember, or a film that moved you without knowing why.
Originally on view until September 14, the exhibition is now extended until the end of the month. Explore the full series in the downstairs gallery and find select works in Bar Strangelove. All prints are for sale in a limited edition of 10.
