The Dutch language is not only teeming with idioms, they are also regularly used in everyday conversations. Without knowing what those expressions mean, it can be at times difficult to understand what’s being communicated to us. 🤔
What’s more, the idiomatic phrases usually include an object or a phenomenon that is of certain importance to the Dutch culture. By knowing the phrase, we gain more context around the language that we’re learning, and learn little bits and pieces of the Dutch history. 🤓
This week’s phrases include the Dutch word for the cake “de koek” or the biscuit/cookie “het koekje”. “De koek” has a generally positive meaning, unless you combine it with larie-, klets- or l*l-, in which case it means something of little value.
All phrases are presented as ready-made sentences so you can apply them immediately in your everyday Dutch 😃 Below each phrase, you will find a corresponding sentence with the same meaning in easy non-idiomatic Dutch. An English translation is provided as well.
