Landlords in the Netherlands are not allowed to choose the percentage of rent increase they want. Instead, they have to stick to the percentage determined by the government. Rent increases are only allowed if the current rent is below the legally permitted rent. This regulation aims to create a more stable and predictable housing market by limiting arbitrary rent hikes.

If you are renting an apartment in the Netherlands, you most likely received a bill from the municipality. This bill sees to the municipality user taxes; waste tax (afvalstoffenheffing) and water taxes (zuiveringsheffing and watersysteemheffing ingezetenen).

If you have a low income and no assets, contact the municipality as soon as possible. You may qualify for a reduction of this bill! The waste tax could be reduced to only 50% and the water taxes to 0! All you need to do is proof your low income.

On the bill itself it shows how you can get the reduction (kwijtschelding in Dutch). Take action as soon as possible!
