If you ever find yourself in Valkenburg, don’t miss this hidden gem — a free and fascinating prehistoric site: the Neolithic flint mine ⛏️🪨
It’s one of the few Late Stone Age flint mines in the Netherlands, where people over 7,000 years ago dug deep into the earth to extract flint — used to make tools, weapons, and firestarters 🔥. You can look right into the ancient tunnels which are now open at street level, and see the marks left in the rock by the prehistoric mining tools.
And lucky for us, the mine was located a couple hundred meters from our hotel! 🤩

I was a VERY happy archeologist today! After trekking all the way to I was rewarded by getting to analyze a fantastic Late Bronze Age hoard full of giant spiral bracelets, solid bracelets, glass beads, axes and even a very special horsey item… We found lots of little decorations and even loads of use-wear 🤩
