Defacto Urbanism is an award-winning interdisciplinary studio located in Rotterdam.

The past few years have shown that the sea level in the course of the 21st century may rise faster than the prediction. A frequently asked question is: what does this mean for the Netherlands? Which functions will come under pressure and what opportunities does this bring? Those questions are being explored in our on-going project, “Accelerated Sea Level Rise”.

Our initial sketch for the Double D**e Project!

The sketch illustrates characteristic of the Southwest Delta that is the landscape with parallel d**es, it is historically developed by stepped reclamation of the naturally extending flood plains. By re-opening the current primary sea d**e, the ebb and flow of the tide can enter the land behind it and deposit sediments. The second d**e is and can be lower than the primary d**e since the water force will already be reduced by the primary levee and the created foreshore.

Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities Asia - 30/10/2020

The Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities Asia (WaL) programme is the winner of the Dutch Design Awards.

After the announcement of winning in the ‘Best Commissioning’ category, Henk Ovink, the Netherlands Special Envoy for International Water Affairs, expressed his gratitude and thanked the jury and the organisation.

Defacto Urbanism is proud to, together with CDR, RoyalHaskoningDHV, Nelen en Schuurmans, Devcon, WUR and the Khulna University, be one of the design teams participating in Water as Leverage. Water is at the core of the programme, the interconnecting element and a leverage for turning the biggest risk into the greatest opportunity. Using water as a starting point to work with it in an inclusive and integrated way leverages many other challenges societies face. Using Water as Leverage can induce an effect on social development and employment, sustainable economic development and the recovery of biodiversity. Commissioning these challenges and persuading multidisciplinary teams to look at these challenges from an integrated, design-driven and innovative perspective thrives action and enthusiasm on the ground.

Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities Asia - Water around the world is not only the most important risk factor, but is the biggest all-encompassing challenge. Water has the potential for transformative and sustainable impact and a comprehensive cultural shift. This is the idea behind Water as Leverage, which contributes to the Paris Agreeme...
