La menace de leur utilisation, qu'elle soit intentionnelle ou accidentelle, pourrait provoquer une catastrophe humanitaire sans précédent. Les leçons douloureuses d'Hiroshima et de Nagasaki doivent nous servir de rappel constant des conséquences dévastatrices de ces armes.

Aujourd'hui, le risque est encore plus élevé en raison de la prolifération nucléaire et de l'instabilité politique dans certaines régions du monde. C'est pourquoi le désarmement nucléaire n'est pas seulement une option, mais une nécessité urgente pour prévenir une nouvelle tragédie.

🌍 Le 6 août 1945, le bombardement atomique d'Hiroshima a marqué un tournant tragique dans l'histoire de l'humanité. Cette douloureuse commémoration nous rappelle les horreurs et la destruction inimaginable causées par les armes nucléaires 💥. Aujourd'hui, face à un risque élevé d'utilisation de ces armes dévastatrices, nous ne pouvons ignorer les leçons du passé.

⚠️ Les tensions géopolitiques croissantes et l'instabilité mondiale rendent impératif le désarmement nucléaire. La simple existence de ces armes représente une menace de catastrophe humanitaire sans précédent, et agir de manière décisive est plus crucial que jamais.

☮️ Le désarmement nucléaire est la voie vers un monde plus sûr et pacifique. La détention de ces armes par un petit nombre d'États crée un déséquilibre de pouvoir qui alimente les conflits et met en péril la sécurité globale. En éliminant ces arsenaux, nous renforçons la confiance mutuelle et encourageons un dialogue constructif entre les nations.

💡 Investir dans le désarmement nucléaire libérerait des ressources considérables qui pourraient être réallouées pour des objectifs humanitaires et de développement. Ces fonds pourraient servir à lutter contre la pauvreté, améliorer la santé publique, promouvoir l'éducation, et soutenir la recherche scientifique 📚.

🌐 Le désarmement nucléaire enverrait un message fort à la communauté internationale : un engagement clair envers la paix, la sécurité et la coopération mondiale. Cela renforcerait la crédibilité des efforts multilatéraux pour résoudre les conflits par des moyens pacifiques et promouvoir le dialogue diplomatique 🤝.

As a former fellow of the UN Disarmament Fellowship Programme in 2015, I am profoundly impacted by our study visit to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague. This experience was a turning point in my professional life, allowing me to understand firsthand the remarkable work being done to ban chemical weapons.

The visit to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) enabled me to reconcile my theoretical knowledge with practical application within the framework of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). This convention is one of the most exemplary and accomplished treaties in the field of disarmament.

Despite significant progress in destroying chemical weapon stockpiles, the OPCW continues to work tirelessly to prevent the re-emergence of these weapons, particularly in a context of growing geopolitical tensions, conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war, and the emergence of new technologies.

The OPCW relies on several essential pillars: disarmament and non-proliferation, assistance and protection, verification, and international cooperation. These pillars are crucial for maintaining global security and ensuring that the horrors of chemical weapons do not recur. The training received through the fellowship programme not only enriched my expertise in disarmament and non-proliferation but also inspired me to actively contribute to this noble cause.
I am grateful for this opportunity, which allowed me to meet dedicated experts and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and solutions related to combating chemical weapons.

This week, as the OPCW welcomes new fellows from the United Nations Disarmament Fellowship Programme, I am confident that their experience will be equally transformative and will encourage them to continue their commitment to disarmament and non-proliferation.
