With roots in the Loire Valley, our travel specialist Pierre shares his favourite reasons to visit the region 🇫🇷✨
1. A valley of fairytale châteaux
Over 300 châteaux earned the Loire Valley its UNESCO status from Chambord’s legendary Leonardo staircase to Chenonceau’s towers reflected in the river. No place on earth concentrates this level of Renaissance grandeur in such a in one small region.
2. World-renowned wines straight from the source
Muscadet, Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Crémant de Loire, often poured by the winemaker themselves. Pair your cellar tour with “Rillettes de Tours” (preparation of meat that’s cooked slowly until very tender, then shredded and mixed with fat to form a rich, spreadable paste), Sainte-Maure goat cheese, or a “Tarte Vigneronne” (a local apple tart on a caramelised puff pastry base, topped with a wine jam)
3. Tours, a vibrant city with soul
Stroll to Place Plumereau, one of France’s most beautiful medieval squares, then lose yourself half-timbered house lined streets and terrace cafés. Discover the region’s rich history through its many impressive monuments such as ’tour Charlemagne’, Basilica of Saint Martin or even the prestigious St Gatien Cathedral.
4. Europe’s finest cycling route
La Loire à Vélo winds 900 km of flat riverside trails through vineyards and villages. Beyond cycling, the valley offers kayaking, hot-air ballooning, and forest walks through the Sologne.
5. Beautiful in every season
Summer brings Son et Lumière light shows on château walls; Autumn turns the vineyards golden at harvest. In Winter the castles are crowd-free, and Tours hosts one of France’s most charming Christmas markets.
