It all started with Dr. Nyoman Serengen in 1985. He was practising his martial art on the beach in Singaraja, Bali. Two butterflies starts circling him, and after some time he tries to swat them.
He misses and misses, and eventually gets so fired up he goes after them, but each time he hits they glide away. They eventually lead him to a great tree near the beach, whereupon he was confronted with a giant shadow that spoke: "this is our first meeting". Nyoman Serengen ran away terrified in disbelief of what he saw and of the second coming of the spirit.
During nighttime in his house the spirit comes to him again and gives him its name: "Loro Ijo". He pinches himself and asks "Is this a dream?" many times.
Eventually, he decides to call the spirit: "Loro Ijo!". As he calls the name, the doors open, the light dims, and the big dark spirit is standing in front of him.
Nyoman Serengen becomes terrified and asks the spirit to go away. The spirit starts teasing him and says: "You've been training martial arts all your life - why are you afraid of me?".
The second time he goes training at the beach in Singaraja the spirit jumps in front of him, and Nyoman Serengen runs away again.
The third time the spirit shows itself again, and Nyoman Serengen tells it to go away "I don't want to see you again!".
On that third night, the spirit comes to Nyoman Serengen again and says "If you don't want me to come to you, then you can come to my temple instead and meditate". This temple is Pura Sengara Penimbangan on the beach in Singaraja. "Come to this temple and meditate tomorrow evening". Nyoman Serengen agreed.
Next evening before sunset on the fourth night Nyoman Serengen came prepared with a bag of peanuts that he was peeling to keep centered. At sunset Nyoman Serengen is still peeling peanuts, when this giant shadow jumps in front of him and disappears. Scared, he runs home the fastest way he knew - through thorns, bushes, and rough vegetation, receiving cuts all over his body, especially his legs.
That same evening the spirit comes to him again and says "Why do you run away? You should be continuing your meditation. Come back tomorrow." Nyoman Serengen agrees again.
The following evening he goes back to the temple, this time wearing tall boots in case he has to run again. As he sits to meditate the ground separates and fire starts coming out of the ground. Scared, he tries to run away, but the spirit keeps him there. Nyoman Serengen starts kicking, punching and using all the fighting skills he has, but nothing lands.
All out of energy he stops hitting. At this moment, the spirit picks him up and tosses him far away on the beach. The spirit approaches, and Nyoman Serengen says: "I surrender. I'm not going to run away - I've spent all my energy. If you want to kill me, then do so, whatever you want. I'm too tired. I surrender."
The spirit then tells him to come back to the temple to meditate, and that during those meditations he will receive guidance.

"The day before yesterday was the most challenging day so far. Fasting for two days brought my physical energy low and made clear to me the challenges that my mind must be aware of to deal with, namely addictions, laziness, and love of pleasures. Succumbing to these impulses has been a pattern for so long, and they creep in through the smallest thoughts, the tiniest impulses, and they cannot be allowed to fester. Through determination, practise, and self-compassion I pushed out the most amazing session the following day after a restless night of tossing and turning in bed. Keeping the intention strongly in heart, mind, and spirit made it possible. This is to future me if times get tough. Keep at it." - Me to myself and anyone listening.

Not every training session will be your best. We always strive to do our best, and we often let ourselves down and drain ourselves because our expectations didn't materialise. As long as we go in with the most effort and purest hearts we can, then we've done our part. Sometimes we actually NEED a terrible training session to figure out what needed correcting. Sometimes that negative experience was exactly what was needed to find the proverbial "Lotus in the mud", "Light in the darkness", or "Pearl in the oyster".
